Chosen theme : FREEDOM. Metaphorically, it could also fit with the picture of the jam. Read the plot.

What's this?

Think about a hardcore 2D platformer game, without boss. Just you and your reflexes. Step in the shoes of a nameless hero and hack your way to your own creation, a destructive app you vowed to shutdown. There are some terminals here and there to hack. The more terminals you reach, the better the end.

Note from le Sound Designer : it was supposed to be that way, but due to limitations of the game jam, I had to keep things simple!

ANOMALY IN THE SIGNAL

I lost my name. I made a weapon of mass lobotomy because I was paid to do so. The guilt was stronger than money and I decided to flee. Because of my creation, every single citizen of this city lost his freedom... Including myself.

I left the city empty handed. I trained day and nights, trying to rebuild a new life far away. Once again, the guilt was stronger. There is no way I could enslave everyone and be left unpunished. Luckily, I am aware there is a breach on my weapon. It's time to hack my way.

That's right... Once again... I am my own worst enemy.

AREA 1 - THE DYSTOPIA

For long, I thought that to be free meant to be alone. I can't stay passive when the world itself is being destroyed with a weapon I developed. The guilt was too strong. I have to destroy my creation.

Level 1 - The streets

This is the city I used to live. Things have become way more oppressive than it was when I had to exile. Everything is made of screens, spamming their brains with the app I once developed and everyone call that freedom. Luckily, there were a breach only myself know about this weapon of lobotomy.

Level 2 - Cables to the sky

They won't listen to me. Talk about the Stockholm Syndrome. I hate doing this, but I have to rely on brute force. There are some secrets that only the upper discrict know, way above us. Yes, the rich people who can directly enjoy the sun.

Level 3 - Upper districts

There are things I didn't know. It seems like there is another world under our world. It sounds like déjà-vu. However, no one can attack the Facility directly, this would mean a death penalty. I have to think about something else to break the app.

AREA 2 - THE UNDERGROUND

There are people underground. That was not always the case.

Level 4 - Toxic descent

Electric cables everywhere. And since there ain't no sky on the underground, it's no wonder there is no freedom. The lower I descent, the worse the atmosphere. I can feel their stare at me but I can not see who is staring.

Level 5 - The slums

Of course I was expecting to meet some unfriendly faces. They don't know who am I and it's better that way. At least, no matter how aggressive they could be, people from the slums made their own ecosystem and didn't expect to be saved. Well, the pillar that leads to the facility is some meters away.

Level 6 - Forbidden pillar

That will be the final step. Now that I hacked some strategic terminals from both the surface and the underground, I have to go back to the surface to deliver the coup de grâce. Everyone is on my side, I'm not alone anymore. We're like water droplets, and we gonna make your rotten future explode.

AREA 3 - THE FACILITY

This is the final assault. The ultimate weapon, an app I developed by myself, is heavily guarded on the last floors.

Level 7 - Offices

These bureaucrats are making me sick. Why the hell do they think I'll accept their excuse of "only doing their job" so easily? Of course I'll meet some unfriendly faces here, and these ones have fire guns, not just knifes and stones.

Level 8 - Painful ascent

Rain, at this season of they year? Don't tell me this is a bad luck. They could destroy the earth one thousand times if they wished to, so don't tell me they can't freely control the weather. They are already controlling the mass people with my own creations.

Level 9 - To the generator

There's always a breach. That's what I always said. There is a security breach in my own app I can easily destroy. And now I have to face my own creation, facing myself as the alarm yells at every corner of the city : "Warning. There is an anomaly in the signal."

EPILOGUE

I am an anomaly in the signal. That's good. My freedom tastes redemption. There is still a smell of blood in the atmosphere but I'm certain people will rebuild again what was once destroyed. People call me a saviour and no one knows I was the one who enslaved them in the first place.

And once again... I am my own worst enemy.

The real fight for freedom takes places in yourself.

Making of

I used an Anbernic RG353V with a cartridge of LSDj to make music directly on a Game Boy-like machine. The, I recorded each track and imported then to Ardour, a free DAW, to do the mix and the mastering.
