Controls.

If you play on the web version, the controls are:
Z to confirm or interact.
Arrow keys to move.
Enter to pause the game. There is no pause menu in the beginning, within Rumi's house.
Shift is the Select button, but this is not used.

If you play on an emulator or on the actual hardware, the controls are:
A to interact.
D-Pad to move.
Start to pause the game.

Disclaimer!

In the web version, the audio is slightly clumsy. Yes, I know! This is because of hardware restrictions, coupled with web-based emulation. The audio is neat on an emulator and on a real hardware, I promise! Also, the web version might be a bit buggy and laggy but it works fine.

This is a game jam project. You can play and download it for free, it's not even donation-based. If someone asks you to pay or donate in order to play this game, then you're being scammed! If you want to support me, check my other projects.

The project is finished. The only updates it will receive will be to fix typos if there are some typos in dialogs. Please note that due to hardware restrictions, updating the game will wipe your save file, so I want to keep it safe and update the game only if I discover a major issue.

Hello!

This is the Aftermath!

Made for Secret Santa Game Jam 2024. Also, since this is a puzzle game : as the developer, I strongly advice against helping other people, it completely ruins the fun.

Read books and discover the secrets of this world.

Also!

Just explore, relax (or don't) and solve puzzles. There is no foe to vanquish. Almost everything is optional in this game. You get Hope Coins mostly by solving puzzles, and the only goal to this game is to get enough Hope Coins. There are a lot more Hope Coins than required, so you can play the way you want.

For the design, as curious as it seems me, I took my inspiration from VVVVVV, an excellent game from Terry Cavanagh. You can go anywhere, anytime, you'll just need to walk. I wanted to avoid the labyrinthic tentacular boring design of closed doors, hidden keys. You can clear the game, whether it's in any% or in 100%, in the order you want. If you want to speedrun, then you will need to find the best way!

Oh, and it works on the actual game boy color! Yey!

Aftermath is...

  • Hand-crafted music. No AI has been used!
  • Hand-crafted art. No AI has been used!
  • Everything done by one person only, Hefka, in a limited time (the game jam challenge, eh).
  • An open-world you can explore the way you want.
  • A story you can discover (tho completely optional).
  • Puzzles are not too easy and not too hard and can be solved by anyone.

Aftermath isn't...

  • Closed doors.
  • Tentacular labyrinths.
  • Vulgar humour.

Install instructions

If you use an emulator, just place the rom file in your rom folder, you have nothing else to do.

Also, this game has been tested with a Game Boy Color and an Anbernic RG353V. Just copy and paste the rom file to the correct folder and you're ready to play ;)

The Map is not required and won't solve any puzzle, this is just if you want to have something to play with. Using this map is NOT cheating and it's a part of the game.
